Clinical hypnotherapy in Hamilton, VictoriaWhen the flatness has outstayed its cause.

Depression narrows things — energy, interest, the sense of what is possible. Hypnotherapy works underneath that narrowing rather than arguing with it.

Depression is rarely a single thing. Sometimes it follows a loss that has never been fully grieved. Sometimes it is exhaustion that has gone on so long the body has stopped expecting relief. Sometimes it is a life that has quietly stopped fitting, and the flatness is the only signal left available.

What these have in common is that they are not much moved by being explained. You can understand exactly why you feel as you do and still feel it.

How the work goes

We start by understanding the shape of it — when it arrived, what it is connected to, what has already been tried. From there, hypnotherapy lets us work at the level where mood, motivation and self-relation are actually organised.

Much of the work is with the inner voice: the running commentary that is harsher with you than you would ever be with anyone else. That voice is usually protective in origin and long past useful. Changing it changes a great deal.

I am a clinical member of the Australian Hypnotherapists’ Association. Hypnotherapy sits alongside medical care rather than replacing it — if you are under the care of a GP, psychiatrist or psychologist, please keep that going, and I am happy to work in step with them.

If things feel acute right now, please contact your GP, or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
